Wing Chun Training Camp – Alan Orr – Keighley June 2014
Day 1
The first day of my UK seminars went very well.
It was great to see my group of close students and friends.
We covered Structure in Chi Sao – Controlling your opponent – Flows of attacks – Power development – Angles of attack and control in Chi Sao – Defence of position and much more.
Excellent see my student Peter Irving, who always teaches me lot of new stuff as well.
Duane Harper was a great host and has a great gym.
Some abridged notes from Sai Jun Mak
Chi Sau Drills for next level development
• 8 directions rolling drill
• Rolling split hands drill
• Additional and opposite vectors – combine the previous two drills but this time the arms can press forwards or backwards in any plane.
• As a defence reaction to the above tactics – one can lock position to prevent opponent moving your structure / arms. Depending on how they react to this you can either delink to float or leak.
• Keep opponent in past or future.
• Control of one’s own base and power is all important for success in applying the above ideas.
• Tan sau should not draw back too far as this allows the opponent to delink / huen sau and strike. Better to change tan to fook sau.
• Tan can change from tan to fook to jum sau when it is drawn back. This can lead to multiple options – strike, collar tie, arm drag etc
• Ensure good basic positions whilst rolling – this is 101.
• Do not allow tan to drop
• Do not allow fook sau to ride too high on opponents bong sau. Keep contact at the wrist.
Bong / Lap sau attacks
4 Options from bong / lap attack
Close Range and Kwan Sau
• Wing Chun range is better used at almost chest to chest (just before Greco wrestling range) – best take side angle on opponent.
• Chi Sau can be used to learn how to find your way into that range
• Use that range to control their weight and structure to put them back into a longer striking range position where they are unable to defend or counter.
• Or use that range to set up better position to grapple and take down
• Use of hacking elbow to turn opponent.
• Use of kwan sau to pinball opponent from side to side if they turn back into you. Can back up with lap sau and hacking elbow also.
